  •  Kiran Bedi is a retired Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, social activist, and former tennis player. She was born on June 9, 1949, in Amritsar, Punjab, India.

  • Kiran Bedi completed her schooling from Sacred Heart Convent School in Amritsar and went on to pursue a Bachelor's degree in English from Government College for Women, Amritsar. She later pursued a Master's degree in Political Science from Punjab University.

  • In 1972, Kiran Bedi joined the Indian Police Service and was posted as the first woman officer in the Delhi Police. She worked in various capacities in the Delhi Police and was known for her tough approach towards crime and corruption.

  • Kiran Bedi gained national attention in 1982 when she was appointed as the Inspector General of Prisons in Tihar Jail, Delhi. She introduced several reforms in the jail, including the introduction of yoga and meditation programs for inmates. Under her leadership, Tihar Jail became known for its innovative rehabilitation programs for inmates.

  • In 1993, Kiran Bedi was awarded the Ramon Magsaysay Award for her contribution to government service. She became the first Indian woman to receive this prestigious award.

  • After retiring from the police service in 2007, Kiran Bedi became involved in various social initiatives. She founded the Navjyoti India Foundation, an NGO that works towards the rehabilitation of drug addicts, and has also been associated with various other social organizations.
